Black Garnet Books exists to address racial inequality within the publishing and literary industries, both nationally and within the state of Minnesota.
In an effort to do so, we’ve curated our shelves to focus on literature by authors and illustrators of color, ensuring that any purchase made at our
store directly supports the continued telling of our stories.

Amazon is able to sell their books for criminally-low prices because they don't value ethical consumption, fair
wages for their employees, or the livelihood of independent booksellers. It is a multi-billion dollar company that
will exist no matter what price they set their books for, even if it was just a penny. That is not the case for Black
Garnet, or any other indie bookstore!
The price that publishers set each book at is a fair price for the amount of effort that goes into publishing just a
single book (the years the author took to write it, the editing, the cover illustration, marketing, fair wages, etc.)
and getting it onto the shelves of your favorite bookstore. So, Indie booksellers have no interest in competing
with Amazon's prices because that would require the exploitation of our employees and the devaluation of books.
And we believe books are worth their price!
